Mayaguez has a romantic history. It was an elegant trading port frequented by European sailors en route to South America. Today it's known as the honeymoon capital of Puerto Rico. And due in part to local legend that young Spanish sailors stopping here were sometimes kidnapped by local farmers seeking husbands for their daughters. Many believe the young, lonely sailors were only too happy to comply. For an up-close look at some of the area's lush, tropical vegetation, head to the Tropical Agriculture Research Station. You'll find an impressive tropical garden, featuring many plants you're familiar with in other forms. You can see cacao (chocolate), fruit trees and spices all growing in their natural habitats. Just north of Mayaguez, you'll find some of the best surfing beaches in the Caribbean. Surfers come here from as far away as New Zealand to catch the waves. If you prefer calmer waters, head south. You'll find the perfect place to relax on the white-sand beach. Or go snorkeling, sailing, fishing or swimming in the milder surf there.
